Cinema is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Zinfandel, and Petite Sirah. It’s the premium member of the Director’s Cut series of Coppola wines. According to their website, the Director’s Cut series “pays homage to the history of filmmaking with its wraparound label designed after a zoetrope strip, one of the earliest moving picture devices. Each Director’s Cut label is a replica of a strip from Francis’s personal Zoetrope collection”. The label is clever indeed, although difficult to read with its gold lettering on black background.
Cinema is lush and full-bodied, blending the best traits of cabernet and zinfandel. The nose opens up immediately with juicy fresh fruits and herbs. Abundant cherry and blueberry jam are layered with a vegetal aroma. The first impression on the palate is currant and blackberry followed by chewy tannins and hints of graphite and spice. The finish is long and bright with a peppery finale.
We’ve had other vintages of Cinema that seemed a bit less grippy; I could feel the stickiness around my teeth. Maybe it had something to do with Sonoma’s unusual weather in 2011. Even so, we’ll keep Cinema in our favorites list and move on to the 2012 vintage that’s available now.
