Decoy wines are the lower priced line from Duckhorn Vineyards, Napa Valley. The Decoy Sonoma County Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of 82% Cabernet Sauvignon, 10% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot.
Black cherry dominates the nose with traces of nutmeg and mushroom. The cherry and other berry flavors follow through on the palate. A medium-bodied mouth feel is accompanied by mild, soft tannins. A moderate length finish is comprised of tobacco and vanilla. The acidity is well balanced by the sweetness.
Decoy is a good choice at the $15 – $17 price point, although I see that it runs as high as $23 on the internet. Priced at the higher end, I wouldn’t consider it a great deal. Give it extra points if you are a fan of cherry vanilla.
